Bulk and zero-waste, zero-waste strategies no longer hold any secrets for you.<br>When it comes to clothing, you turn to ethical production methods, and favor materials that are more respectful of the environment.<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to equipment: household appliances, DIY, high-tech, you continue to consume without necessarily paying attention to the durability of the products! Why?<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, we\u2019re being deliberately caricatured. On the equipment side, however, most consumers are unaware of the environmental externalities associated with the product life cycle.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u201d4.18.0\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d text_font=\u201d|600|||||||\u201d min_height=\u201d298.8px\u201d custom_margin=\u201d-28px|||||\u201d custom_padding=\u201d19px||0px|||\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is the product life cycle?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each item of equipment (household appliances, high-tech, tools) is associated with a life cycle.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This life cycle corresponds to a series of successive stages that break down the product\u2019s life phases.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the simplified stages in the life cycle of a household electrical appliance, for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extraction of raw materials (ore, wood, oil\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product manufacture (electric motor, electronic board, drain pump, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product transport (from manufacturing and assembly plants to points of sale)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product distribution (store, web platform)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product use (water, electricity, detergent, fabric softener)  <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product end-of-life (recycling, recovery, disposal)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u201d4.18.0\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d custom_margin=\u201d-28px|||||\u201d custom_padding=\u201d13px||0px|||\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Life cycle impacts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For each of these different phases, there are environmental impacts.<br>And they\u2019re not weak. Phases upstream of product use systematically weigh heavily on the product\u2019s environmental balance.<\/p>\n<p>By way of example, here\u2019s a capture of the life cycle of a television:<\/p>\n<p>These impacts can also be modeled as a \u201ctechnological rucksack\u201d. This technological rucksack represents the amount of material that needs to be extracted to produce the finished product. As you\u2019ll see from the examples below, this is no trivial matter!<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s important to understand that every time we buy or renew a product, there\u2019s a significant environmental impact behind it, even for the most energy-efficient or environmentally-friendly products. A very effective way of putting things into perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u201d4.17.6\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d custom_margin=\u201d-28px||-2px|||\u201d custom_padding=\u201d23px||0px|||\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Second-hand consumption<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best environmental impact is the one we don\u2019t produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t always have to buy new to find what you\u2019re looking for.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For small budgets, it\u2019s even advisable to invest a limited sum in a well-made second-hand product rather than a new entry-level product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take care, however, that the second-hand reflex is not a pretext for over-consumption. You need to equip yourself, learn as much as you can about the product family in question. It\u2019s essential to take stock of your constraints, so as to acquire a product capable of meeting them. You don\u2019t need a racing car to get to work, but you wouldn\u2019t take a Twingo to a racetrack!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So pay close attention to product characteristics, power, sealing and quality, to make sure that the product works properly and is not over- or under-used.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Installing a 10-square-meter wooden deck doesn\u2019t require the same screwdriver as refurbishing a 120-square-meter farmhouse.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make the right choice, get the facts. What\u2019s more, when you divide the cost price by the number of years of use, it\u2019s often more advantageous to spend a little more on durable products.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Maintenance and repair for greater durability<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extending the lifespan of this equipment must become a reflex and even the norm. The current waste of resources due to short life spans is no longer sustainable.
