LONGTIME® Certification Schemes

The criteria set out in Version 2 of the LONGTIME® certification scheme are the result of two years of consultation and continuous development. The LONGTIME® V2 certification scheme is built around three fundamental pillars and now includes 38 assessment criteria, providing a comprehensive and expanded approach to product durability: reliability, repairability and life cycle. With the exception of minor updates, the certification scheme is intended to remain valid for five years, with its next revision scheduled for 2030.

The following criteria define a common baseline that is systematically supplemented and adapted to the specific characteristics of each product category. They are provided for information purposes and do not include the full set of sub-criteria applicable to the various categories of certified products. For further details, please refer to the sector-specific certification schemes available on the LONGTIME® label website.

01

The product is robust and reliable

1 – Resistance to stresses
The manufacturer identifies the functions of the product and its parts, as well as the associated critical use-related stresses. The manufacturer demonstrates durable design choices, optimised through reliability and/or repairability strategies.

2 – Production and supply chain
The manufacturer demonstrates that processes are in place to control and maintain consistently high manufacturing and assembly quality during the production phase, whether these processes are carried out internally or outsourced.

3 – Logistics
The manufacturer reduces risks to the reliability of components and assemblies through effective quality processes covering supply conditions, packaging, storage, handling and transport.

4 – Reliability improvement plan
The manufacturer provides a version history of the product and identifies the changes implemented to improve its durability.

5 – Disruptive technology
The manufacturer specifies the proportion of disruptive technology incorporated into the product and identifies the functions associated with it. The manufacturer demonstrates the reliability of this technology, particularly where it relates to a primary function.

6 – Failure rate
The manufacturer monitors actual failure rates and/or indicators for each part of the product in order to track product reliability at least until the last unit of the relevant model is placed on the market.

7 – Product identification
The manufacturer uses a method that enables the product and its version to be identified unambiguously by relevant stakeholders, in order to optimise maintenance and failure management processes.

8 – Completeness of user information
The manufacturer provides instructions detailing recommendations for the use and maintenance of the product and provides the user with a maintenance plan. This information, which must also be available online, must be comprehensive and relevant in order to reduce the rate of failures caused by external factors and encourage responsible use practices.

9 – Format of user information
The manufacturer provides clear, simple and accessible user and maintenance instructions, with appropriate font size, vocabulary, language and print quality, so that they can be easily understood by end users.

10 – Prolonged periods of non-use
The manufacturer identifies the risks of failure associated with prolonged periods of non-use of the product. The manufacturer informs the end user of the conditions of use required to prevent these risks.

02

The product and its technical support facilitate repair

11 – Disassembly of parts
The disassembly depth is appropriate to the category of the product parts concerned, and the disassembly time is consistent with the type of person normally expected to be able to carry out the procedure.

12 – Fasteners and connectors
Access to functional parts must not exceed accessibility level C, unless otherwise specified in the sector-specific requirements.

13 – Tools
The tools required for repair and/or disassembly must be appropriate to the category of the product parts concerned.

14 – Working environment
Product-specific repair procedures must be carried out in a working environment appropriate to the category of the product parts concerned.

15 – Skill level
The level of technical competence required to carry out a repair must be appropriate to the category of the parts involved.

16 – Spare part interfaces
The different parts of the product and their connection interfaces incorporate standardisation practices appropriate to the expected level of repairability for the product family.

17 – Spare parts availability period
Spare parts must remain available for at least the expected lifetime of the product category and its different parts. The availability period is calculated from the date on which the last unit of the relevant model is placed on the market.

18 – Availability of spare parts to target groups
The manufacturer ensures that spare parts are made available to the target groups appropriate to the category of the parts concerned.

19 – Conditions for the sale of spare parts
The manufacturer specifies the conditions under which spare parts are sold. The way in which spare parts are offered reflects the product’s parts breakdown, and parts must not be sold only as part of a bundle unless this is justified by consistent and verifiable design, calibration and/or economic considerations.

20 – Price of spare parts
The price of any individual spare part must not exceed a specified maximum percentage of the recommended retail price excluding tax. A tolerance is permitted for parts whose unit cost exceeds the specified percentage.

21 – Spare parts delivery costs
The manufacturer supplies spare parts at the actual cost of shipping and handling or offers alternative solutions that reduce the cost of receiving the parts.

22 – Spare parts delivery time
The manufacturer demonstrates its ability to supply spare parts to relevant stakeholders within five working days.

23 – Documentation relating to failure scenarios
The manufacturer makes available relevant information and instructions for resolving failure scenarios and/or carrying out the maintenance plan. This information must be appropriate to the product category and the relevant target groups. The minimum period for which this information must remain available is specified in the sector-specific certification schemes.

24 – Fault diagnosis support
The manufacturer provides information and/or diagnostic support mechanisms that facilitate the identification of failure scenarios.

25 – Resetting settings and passwords
In the event of a repair or transfer to a third party, the product provides user data management processes that enable it to be reused effectively and securely.

26 – Software
The manufacturer ensures that the product’s original performance is maintained following operating system and/or firmware updates and distinguishes between feature updates and corrective updates. The user is informed of the consequences of updates and their consent is required.

27 – Internal failure resolution policy
In the event of product failure, the manufacturer follows a policy of repair or refurbishment rather than replacement, unless repair is more costly than replacement, while taking the user’s wishes into account.

28 – Contacting after-sales service
The manufacturer demonstrates that an after-sales service case can be opened within no more than two working days.

29 – Return services
The manufacturer provides end users with return services appropriate to the product category and consistent with its distribution network, regardless of warranty status.

30 – Conditions for returning a product for repair
The original packaging must not be required for a product to be accepted for repair, provided that the product is packaged and protected to a level equivalent to that provided at the time of purchase.

31 – Products of high practical importance
Within its service network, and for product categories considered to be of high practical importance, the manufacturer minimises the time required to complete the repair process and return the product to the end user.

32 – Warranty period
The warranty period during which a defect is presumed to have existed at the time of delivery must not be less than 24 months.

33 – Warranty exclusions
The manufacturer’s general warranty terms and conditions must not include unfair exclusions relating to the normal use of the product.

03

The product reduces its life cycle impacts

34 – Protection of health, safety and the environment
With regard to the protection of human health, personal safety, the safety of installations and environmental protection, the manufacturer demonstrates that it implements measures meeting, as a minimum, the requirements of European Directive 2011/65/EU and Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning restrictions on the use of certain hazardous substances in equipment, and/or measures aimed at preserving the ecosystems most significantly affected.
